Nowadays, social media is an inseperable part of life of young people. For them, it is also very often the main source of information. On the base of materials read and viewed in social media they shape their opinions and attitudes. Therefore, it is important for every organization that works in the field of youth to use this huge opportunity which is reaching young people via activities in social media. In order to use social media in the field of youth work to the fullest potential and in the most effective way, specific knowledge and skills are needed. Intuitive activities, which are not carefully planned might not be that affective as we would like to. Involving youth through social media is a complex process. There are many facts and nuances, that should be taken into considerations. Some of them are based on useful research and statistics (e.g. facts that best time to publish video content on Facebook is evening, tweets with hashtags get 2x more engagement, Tweets that include links are 86% more likely to be retweeted). Others – come from experience of our youthworkers and our organziations, which we would like to discuss and share. We all have
some success and lessons learnt from mistakes. Being actively involved in our local communities in ‘offline’ activities is extremely important for our organizations. However, we would like to also be more involved in the online sphere in order to use the potential and possibilities that social media give in reaching young people, changing their behaviours and attitudes, as well as involving them in issues important in local communities.
